A disease that affects more than 300 million people worldwide, obsityobesity has spread at an alarming rate. The number of people with the condition increased by 100 million from 1995 to 2000, according to the World Health Organization. About 30 percent of US adults -- between 20 and 74 years old -- are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the CDC, obesity can cause serious health complications including Type 2 diabetes, cancers -- breast, colon -- and heart disease.

Obesity is measured using a mathematical formula. This formula, which calculates your height in relation to your weight, is called the Body Mass Index, or BMI. Your BMI number can range anywhere from 15, which would be someone who is 6 feet 2 inches tsll and 120 pounds; or your number can be 67, which would be someone who is 4 feet 10 inches tall and 320 pounds. An overweight adult will have a BMI between 25 and 29.9, while an obese adult will have a BMI over 30.
